Panvel Security Guard Publicly Humiliated Over Alleged Stray Dog Incident
A disturbing incident involving a municipal security guard and a stray dog has sparked controversy and legal action in Panvel, Navi Mumbai. Citizens visiting the Vadale pond area confronted an on-duty Panvel Municipal Corporation security guard after witnessing him allegedly strike a stray dog with a wooden baton. The confrontation escalated when an animal activist intervened, leading to a public display of humiliation that was later captured on video and spread across social media platforms.
Viral Video Sparks Confusion and Clarification
The video clip of the incident gained significant traction online after being posted by an X user, who initially claimed the event occurred in Bandra near Bandstand. However, this misinformation was quickly corrected by an animal lover who clarified that the actual location was Panvel. The footage shows two men aggressively threatening the security guard for his actions against the canine.
In the video, the animal activist is heard warning the guard that if anything happens to the female stray dog he allegedly hit, he would return to personally punish him. The activist then compelled the guard to perform sit-ups while holding both ears, forcing him to swear an oath that he would never harm any animal again and would not misuse his official uniform.
Police Intervention and Conflicting Accounts
Senior Inspector Nitin Thakare of the Panvel City Police Station confirmed that the incident took place on the evening of February 2. Following the public humiliation, the security guard, identified as 38-year-old Govind Shinde, filed a formal police complaint. Authorities registered a non-cognisable offence against the accused, Vijay Rangare, for forcing the apology, imposing physical punishment, and publicly humiliating Shinde.
However, the security guard provided a different perspective on his actions. Shinde claimed that the female stray dog was loitering near Vadale pond and had previously bitten his son. He insisted he was merely attempting to shoo the dog away to protect other citizens visiting the Vadale pond area for leisure from potential bites.
Animal Activist's Defense and Counter-Threats
When contacted for his version of events, the accused animal activist, Vijay Rangare, offered a contrasting narrative. "Local residents have consistently described this stray dog as adorable and confirmed it has never bitten anyone while roaming near Vadale pond," Rangare stated. "When the security guard justified hitting the dog by claiming it bit his son, I demanded proof, which he was unable to provide."
Rangare further announced his intention to file an FIR against Shinde for allegedly hurting the stray dog, responding to the non-cognisable offence registered against him. He also revealed that the animal was taken to a veterinarian for examination and treatment to ensure no complications arose from the alleged beating.
