Visakhapatnam: POCSO Accused Attacks Woman with Scissors
In another disturbing incident of crime against women, a young man previously accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act allegedly attacked his victim with a pair of scissors in Duggavanipalem, under Pendurthi police station limits in Visakhapatnam city on Thursday. The victim sustained minor injuries to her neck. She was initially taken to King George Hospital (KGH) for treatment and later shifted to a government-run women's home by the Pendurthi police after receiving first aid.
Background of the Case
The accused, identified as Sai Chandra, had previously lived with the victim at his house. The girl was set to attain majority in April 2022. Her mother, who opposed the relationship, lodged a complaint with Payakaraopeta police, leading to a case under the POCSO Act. Both were remanded to judicial custody at that time.
According to police, Sai Chandra was released on bail on May 6 this year. He allegedly brought the girl to Visakhapatnam on June 15 and later moved her to his aunt's house in Gopalapatnam. Subsequently, he shifted to Pendurthi and stayed in a rented room.
Attack and Legal Action
Police said that Sai Chandra raised the issue of marriage, but the girl refused. He then reportedly consumed a harmful chemical substance and was undergoing treatment at home. Despite this, he continued to pressure her to marry him. When she again refused, he allegedly attacked her with scissors, causing minor injuries to her neck.
Following the victim's complaint, police shifted her to KGH for treatment and later to a government-run home for protection. Sai Chandra was also taken to KGH for treatment. Police confirmed that an attempt to murder case would be registered against him after his discharge from the hospital.
