In a significant security operation, the Dindoshi Police apprehended a man found carrying an illegal firearm in Mumbai's Malad East area on Wednesday. The arrest comes at a critical time, with municipal elections around the corner and prohibitory orders in force across the city.
Alert Police Patrol Leads to Arrest
The incident unfolded around 2:30 pm on Wednesday when a police team was conducting a routine patrol near Shivshahi Maidan. Officers noticed an individual acting suspiciously and hiding behind a tempo. The man, later identified as 28-year-old Shailesh Pawar, attempted to flee upon spotting the police personnel.
Officer Nitin Savne intercepted Pawar and questioned his presence at the location. Pawar failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for his actions, prompting the team to conduct a search.
Recovery of Illegal Weapon and Cartridge
Upon frisking him, the police discovered a white bag in his possession. The bag contained a countrymade revolver. A subsequent search revealed a live cartridge in one of his trouser pockets. The police immediately seized both the illegal firearm and the ammunition.
The suspect was swiftly taken into custody and escorted to the Dindoshi Police station for further interrogation. Following standard procedure, the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Shailesh Pawar under the stringent provisions of the Indian Arms Act.
Heightened Vigilance for Election Security
This arrest underscores the heightened state of alert maintained by the Mumbai Police in the lead-up to the civic polls. Police forces across the city have received explicit instructions to crack down on all forms of illegal activity that could threaten public order during the election period.
The focus areas for this intensified drive include:
- Illegal sale and possession of arms and ammunition.
- Distribution of illicit liquor.
- Drug peddling and other unlawful activities.
The successful interception in Malad East demonstrates the effectiveness of increased patrolling and vigilance. It sends a strong message that the police are actively working to ensure a safe and secure environment for the democratic process, preventing any attempts to disrupt law and order.
