The Jalgaon police have mobilized two specialized teams in a determined effort to establish the identity of an unidentified man, approximately 30 years old, who was fatally assaulted by a group of villagers in Avhane village on Monday evening. The attackers suspected the victim of being a child lifter, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in his death.
Police Struggle to Identify Victim Despite Ongoing Efforts
Superintendent of Police Ashok Nakhate confirmed that as of Wednesday evening, the police had not yet succeeded in ascertaining the identity of the deceased man. However, he emphasized that authorities are actively pursuing all available leads and resources to resolve this critical aspect of the case. The investigation remains a top priority for the Jalgaon taluka police station.
Arrests Made and Legal Proceedings Initiated
In response to the incident, the Jalgaon taluka police have officially registered a murder case and taken six individuals into custody in connection with the killing. The accused have been remanded to police custody until March 2, as confirmed by SP Nakhate. This legal action underscores the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating the violent episode.
Dual-Team Approach to Uncover Victim's Identity
Inspector Shashikant Patil of the Jalgaon taluka police station provided detailed insights into the investigative strategy. He revealed that two teams are currently dedicated to tracing the identity of the victim. One team comprises officers from the Local Crime Branch (LCB), leveraging their expertise in criminal investigations.
Key investigative steps include:
- Reviewing footage from all CCTV cameras installed on roads in and around the crime scene to determine the victim's origin and movements.
- Creating a composite image of the victim and displaying it to residents in Avhane village and surrounding areas.
- Extending the search to locations such as godowns and other public spaces where the victim might have been seen prior to the incident.
Timeline of the Tragic Incident
The sequence of events began on Monday around 8:15 PM when the Jalgaon taluka police received an urgent call from the sarpanch of Avhane village. The sarpanch reported that a group of people were brutally beating an unidentified individual. A police team promptly rushed to the location and discovered the man severely injured, with visible wounds on his face, head, and limbs. The victim was unable to speak due to his condition.
He was immediately transported to the Jalgaon Civil Hospital for emergency medical treatment. During the subsequent investigation, police uncovered that the man had allegedly picked up a three-year-old boy and was seen walking away with him. This action prompted the boy's father and four to five other villagers to confront and assault the man, leading to the fatal outcome.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about mob violence and vigilante justice in rural areas, with authorities now focusing on both identifying the victim and ensuring justice through the legal system.
