Police Crack Down on Illegal New Year's Eve Cockfight
In a decisive action against illegal activities, the Hanumangarh police successfully raided an organised cockfighting and gambling operation in the Bhadra police station area of Jaisalmer on New Year's Eve. The operation led to the immediate arrest of 10 individuals involved in the event. However, the prime accused and main organiser, identified as Barkat Ali, a resident of Bhadra, managed to escape before the authorities could apprehend him.
Secret Tip-Off Triggers Swift Police Action
According to Hanumangarh SP Harishankar, the raid was conducted based on specific secret information received by the police late on Wednesday evening. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, a dedicated police team moved in after confirming that roosters were being forced to fight and substantial amounts of money were being wagered on the outcomes. Both acts are serious offences under India's animal cruelty prevention laws and gambling statutes.
"As soon as the police team arrived, chaos ensued at the spot and many people tried to flee, but police arrested 10 individuals on the spot," stated SP Harishankar on Thursday, detailing the chaotic scene during the intervention.
Seizures, Animal Rescue, and Manhunt Launched
The police confiscated significant evidence from the scene, including two cars, two motorcycles, and Rs 43,500 in cash that was being used for betting. In a move highlighting concern for animal welfare, several roosters found injured during the fight were immediately treated at the spot by a team of veterinary doctors. Subsequently, these animals were handed over to a public institution for ongoing care and rehabilitation.
During the interrogation of the arrested individuals, police confirmed that the illegal cockfight was orchestrated by the absconding Barkat Ali. A formal case has been registered against him, and intensive raids are currently underway across the region to trace and arrest the fugitive organiser.
This crackdown underscores the police's commitment to curbing illegal gambling and preventing cruelty to animals, sending a strong message against such clandestine activities in the region.
