A 23-year-old priest from Rajasthan's Dholpur was arrested for allegedly assaulting a roadside cart vendor, who later died of injuries following a dispute over road space, police said on Saturday.
The accused, Nikung Udaniya, had come to Agra for the treatment of his grandfather at SN Medical College. The incident occurred on April 18 in Sindhi Bazaar under MM Gate police station limits, while the accused was arrested on April 23.
Sanjay Diwakar (34) was returning to his cart when the accused got into an argument with him. According to the complaint filed by Diwakar's mother, Son Devi, the occupants of the car thrashed her son and fled, assuming he was dead. When he did not return home till 11 pm, she went searching and found him lying unconscious near his overturned cart. He was taken to a hospital, where he died on April 19.
Police said the altercation began after the accused asked Diwakar to move his cart on the narrow road. When he refused, the accused abused and assaulted him before fleeing, said station officer (SO) Amar Rana. He added that as per CCTV footage, it was the accused, Udaniya, who came out of the car and thrashed Diwakar. CCTV footage and local inputs helped police trace the car and identify the accused. He was arrested on April 23 and admitted to the assault during questioning, Rana said.
A case has been registered under section 105 (culpable homicide) of the BNS. Further probe is on, and if any accused's names come out, police will arrest them, SO Rana said.
