Several residents of Pune staged a protest outside the Parvati and Swargate police stations on Tuesday night following an incident in which a 50-year-old man allegedly attempted to rape his 9-year-old granddaughter. The incident occurred around 6 pm in a hutment in the city.
Residents Foil Assault Attempt
The sexual assault was thwarted by alert local residents, who intervened, beat the suspect, and promptly informed the police. Officers from the Parvati and Swargate police stations arrived at the scene and detained the man. However, a large number of angry residents gathered, demanding that the suspect be handed over to them for mob justice.
Protest Outside Police Stations
The agitated crowd assembled and sat in front of the two police stations, blocking vehicular traffic in the area. In response, heavy police bandobust was deployed as officers attempted to pacify the protesters. Late into the night, the Parvati police formally detained the grandfather and began recording statements from the women who witnessed the assault attempt. Despite the police actions, the crowd continued to block roads even after midnight.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who are demanding strict action against the accused. Police are investigating the case and have assured the public that justice will be served.
