Dera Chief Ram Rahim Gets 40-Day Parole for 15th Time Since 2017 Conviction
Ram Rahim gets 40-day parole, 15th jail break since conviction

In a recurring development, Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has once again been granted temporary release from prison. The controversial religious leader, who is serving lengthy sentences for the rape of two female followers and the murder of a journalist, has been approved for a 40-day parole period.

Fifteenth Temporary Release Since Conviction

This will mark the 15th occasion that Ram Rahim steps out of jail since his initial conviction in August 2017. He is currently lodged at Sunaria Jail in Rohtak but will spend the parole duration at the sprawling Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters located in Sirsa. The jail authorities in Rohtak have confirmed that formal release orders are still awaited.

A Pattern of Parole and Furlough

Ram Rahim's legal troubles began with his conviction on rape charges, for which he is serving a 20-year sentence. Despite being incarcerated since 2017, he has repeatedly been granted parole and furlough, allowing him temporary freedom on multiple occasions. His most recent release was on August 15 of this year for a celebration.

The timing of this parole is notable as it allows him to be at the dera during a significant period. January 25 holds special importance for the Sirsa-based sect as it marks the birth anniversary of Shah Satnam Ji Maharaj, the second spiritual head of Dera Sacha Sauda.

Ongoing Legal Incarceration and Public Scrutiny

The frequent paroles granted to the convicted Dera chief continue to draw public and media attention, raising questions about the parole system. His convictions relate to serious crimes:

  • A 20-year sentence for the rape of two sadhvis (female followers).
  • Life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.

Despite these serious charges and convictions, the pattern of temporary releases persists, with the upcoming 40-day furlough being the latest in a long series.
