The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya has widened to include around 400 private security personnel deployed at the shrine, sources stated on Tuesday.
Security Personnel Under Scrutiny
According to sources, the police are now examining the roles of these security guards, who were stationed at key points such as the main entry and exit routes of the temple complex, the darshan path, and the routes used to transport offerings. Investigators are reviewing duty rosters, CCTV footage, entry-exit records, and statements from officials to determine if rules were followed during the movement of donations or if any guards allowed lapses.
Potential Legal Action
Sources indicated that if any security personnel are found to have deliberately ignored protocols, shown undue leniency, or aided in theft, they could face legal consequences. The probe aims to identify whether individuals were given leeway without necessary checks.
Background of the Case
On June 13, the Uttar Pradesh government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) following a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust after allegations of donation misappropriation emerged. Based on the SIT's findings, eight individuals were arrested: Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lav Kush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Ram Shankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava, and Ramashankar alias Tinnu Yadav.
Trust Officials Resign
In the wake of the scandal, Champat Rai, general secretary of the trust, and Anil Mishra, a trust member, have submitted their resignations. The investigation continues as authorities seek to uncover the full extent of the alleged embezzlement.
