The Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust's general secretary, Champat Rai, has resigned amid an ongoing embezzlement investigation, according to sources on June 26, 2026. Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, though Rai's name does not appear in the First Information Report (FIR).

Rai's resignation comes as the trust faces scrutiny over alleged financial irregularities. The FIR, filed earlier this month, details misappropriation of funds intended for the Ram Temple construction in Ayodhya. Neither Rai nor trust treasurer Swami Govind Dev Giri Maharaj, also known as Vishnu Pratap Mishra, are named in the complaint. However, sources indicate that investigators are examining their roles in oversight of temple finances.
According to police officials, the eight arrested individuals include contractors and former trust employees. They are accused of siphoning off funds through inflated bills and fake work orders. The total amount embezzled is estimated at over ₹50 crore, based on preliminary audits.

Trust officials have stated that Rai's resignation was voluntary and aimed at ensuring a fair probe. In a brief statement, the trust said: "We respect Champat Rai's decision to step down to uphold the integrity of the investigation. The trust remains committed to transparency and full cooperation with authorities." The Uttar Pradesh Police's Economic Offences Wing is leading the investigation, with forensic audits underway.
Rai, a long-time associate of the Vishva Hindu Parishad, had served as the trust's general secretary since its inception in 2020. His resignation is seen as a significant development in a case that has drawn national attention, given the temple's political and religious importance.

The embezzlement case has sparked political debate, with opposition parties demanding a thorough inquiry.
