In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Cachar district police in Assam seized a large consignment of heroin worth crores and arrested three individuals in Silchar on Tuesday evening. The operation, based on specific intelligence, highlights the ongoing efforts to dismantle narcotics networks in the region.
Naka Check Leads to Major Drug Bust
Acting on credible information, a police team set up a naka check in the Dhudhpatil area under the Silchar police station. They intercepted a vehicle that was allegedly travelling from Mizoram towards Guwahati. A meticulous search of the vehicle revealed a cleverly concealed secret chamber.
From this specially designed compartment, officers recovered 30 soap boxes containing 388 grams of high-grade heroin. The police estimated the street value of the seized narcotics to be a staggering Rs 2.2 crore.
Accused Identified and Arrested
The police swiftly took three occupants of the vehicle into custody. The arrested individuals have been identified as:
- Dildar Hussain (25)
- Nazrul Hussein (20)
- Jasim Uddin (25)
All three are residents of Bhanga Bazar, which falls under the Dholai police station in Cachar district.
Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation
Confirming the details of the successful operation, Cachar Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das stated that the raid was conducted based on solid intelligence inputs. He provided crucial insights into the suspected drug route.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the consignment was being transported to Guwahati,” SP Das said. He further emphasized that “Further investigation will be conducted to establish both forward and backward linkages in the narcotics network.”
The police have registered a formal case under the relevant stringent sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The investigative process is actively underway to uncover the broader network, identify other individuals involved in the racket, and trace the origins and intended destination of the drug consignment.
This seizure in Silchar represents a major blow to drug peddlers attempting to use the region as a transit route. It underscores the vigilance of the Assam police in their anti-narcotics operations and their commitment to tackling the scourge of illegal drugs.
