Sassoon Report on Girl's Death During Eye Procedure Awaited

The report from Sassoon General Hospital's medical board regarding the death of a six-year-old girl during an eye evaluation procedure at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital is still pending, a month after her death on May 18 sparked allegations of medical negligence.

Dr. Yellapa Jadhav, medical superintendent of Sassoon General Hospital, stated that they have received a preliminary report from their experts but require additional experts to prepare a comprehensive report, which will be submitted soon.

The Sassoon medical board's report is expected to be a critical document, as the police decision on whether to file an FIR against the private charitable hospital for alleged medical negligence will depend on it.

Six-year-old Priyanshi was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on May 18 for an eye evaluation procedure, during which she died. The girl's family has questioned the delay in submitting the Sassoon medical report.

Jitendra Bagade, Priyanshi's father, expressed his anguish, stating that they have not received any response from the police or the hospital regarding responsibility for their daughter's death. He mentioned that they have no political connections and their poverty forces them to focus on work, but they remain hopeful for justice so that no other child faces a similar fate.

He added that they will never recover from this loss. As daily wage workers from a remote village in Gondia, they believed their daughter was in safe hands at the city hospital, but what happened was traumatic.

Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital has initiated an internal inquiry, while the Alankar police referred the case to the Sassoon medical board for expert opinion.

Earlier this month, a five-member expert panel appointed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to investigate the death noted that the hospital failed to carry out essential tests, including X-ray, ECG, and 2D Echo, before treating the girl. The panel also recommended further investigation by Sassoon Hospital.
