Vasco: To resolve the water crisis caused by a technical snag in Mormugao taluka over the past few days, a 12-hour-long emergency shutdown was enforced at the Selaulim water pumping station on Friday for urgent maintenance of pump no. 1. Many parts of the taluka experienced limited water supply during the day due to the shutdown.
A senior PWD official stated that during the shutdown, supply from the 100 MLD water treatment plant was stopped, while supply from the old 160 MLD plant continued as usual. Due to the disruption, residents in many areas were forced to rely on private tankers for drinking water.
Mormugao is among the worst-hit areas in South Goa whenever there is a disruption in supply at the Selaulim water treatment plant. During such periods, households often hire private water tankers and spend around Rs 1,000-1,500 per trip. Residents also turn to wells, borewells, and natural springs, but several of these sources have dwindled due to neglect and poor maintenance. Natural springs, residents said, are also being avoided due to contamination.
PWD assistant engineer (water section) Naresh Painginkar said the Mormugao taluka receives 86 MLD of water supply, which caters to all areas, but in the event of technical snags—such as the most recent one—supply levels drop, leading to shortages. “Power fluctuations or failures can also affect pumping operations and simultaneously lead to a water crisis,” Painginkar added.
