In a significant breakthrough, Punjab Police arrested an accomplice of the Shambhu rail track bombers from Amritsar on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as a key facilitator in the conspiracy, was apprehended following a joint operation by the state's Anti-Gangster Task Force and local intelligence units.
Details of the Arrest
The accused, whose name has not been disclosed pending further investigation, is believed to have provided logistical support to the main perpetrators. Officials stated that the arrest was made possible through technical surveillance and analysis of call data records. The suspect was produced before a local court and remanded to police custody for seven days.
Connection to the Shambhu Incident
The Shambhu rail track bombing, which occurred last month, caused significant disruption to train services on the Ambala-Saharanpur route. The improvised explosive device (IED) was planted on the tracks but was detected and defused before any casualties occurred. Investigators have linked the conspiracy to a banned extremist group, though specific affiliations are still being probed.
Police recovered a mobile phone and SIM cards from the suspect, which are being examined for evidence. Preliminary investigations suggest the accomplice was involved in procuring materials for the IED and scouting locations for potential attacks.
Ongoing Investigation
The Anti-Gangster Task Force is coordinating with central agencies to uncover the broader network. A senior police officer stated, "We are working on multiple leads and expect more arrests in the coming days." The arrest is seen as a major step in dismantling the module responsible for targeting railway infrastructure in the region.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Security has been heightened along key railway routes in Punjab and neighboring states.
Previous Arrests
Earlier this month, two other suspects were arrested in connection with the same case from different locations in Punjab. Their interrogation revealed the involvement of a third individual, leading to the latest arrest. The police are also examining possible links to other recent sabotage attempts in northern India.
The investigation continues, with forensic teams analyzing recovered materials and digital evidence. The accused will be subjected to polygraph tests to ascertain the full extent of the conspiracy.
