Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has approached the Delhi High Court seeking action against the publication of deepfake videos that use artificial intelligence to show him praising Pakistan. The clips, which are entirely fabricated, were circulated on social media platforms, including Instagram.
Court Hearing and Meta's Response
During the hearing, counsel representing Meta submitted that the offending content on Instagram had been made inaccessible as of this morning. The court acknowledged the submission and is expected to hear further arguments on the matter.
Tharoor's Concerns
Tharoor's petition highlights the malicious use of AI technology to create false narratives that could harm his reputation and incite public unrest. He has urged the court to direct social media platforms to take down all such content and prevent its further dissemination.
The case underscores the growing challenge of deepfakes in India, where manipulated videos are increasingly used to spread misinformation. Legal experts say this could set a precedent for how courts handle AI-generated content.
The next hearing is scheduled for later this week.
