BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has expressed gratitude to Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti for constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged scam involving the issuance of 87,347 fraudulent birth certificates by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The SIT will be headed by Lakmi Gautam.

Details of the Complaint

Somaiya had earlier filed a complaint with the Azad Maidan Police Station, demanding action against what he termed a criminal conspiracy between BMC health officials and Bangladeshi agents. According to the complaint, these individuals allegedly issued 87,347 birth certificates to Bangladeshi infiltrators and other ineligible persons, thereby facilitating their illegal stay and access to benefits in India.

Scope of the Investigation

The SIT is expected to thoroughly examine the records and identify all those involved in the scam. The investigation will focus on the role of BMC health officials and the network of agents who allegedly facilitated the fraud. The police have assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits.
