The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Chandigarh Police made significant progress in the high-profile suicide case of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. In a marathon session lasting nearly ten hours, the team interrogated three crucial individuals linked to the events preceding the officer's tragic death.
Key Witnesses Face Intense Questioning
The questioning was conducted at the Chandigarh police headquarters in Sector 9. The individuals grilled by the SIT included Haryana Police DSP Gulab Singh, the then station house officer (SHO) of Urban Estate police station in Rohtak, Inspector Neeraj Kumar, and the complainant in the original bribery case, liquor contractor Praveen Bansal. Sources revealed that the SIT questioned them both individually and as a group.
The interrogation covered a wide range of critical aspects: the First Information Report (FIR) registered before the suicide, the alleged conspiracy behind it, the bribery accusations, and the evidence submitted by the complainant. This marks a pivotal phase in unraveling the sequence of events that led to the officer taking his own life.
Timeline of a Tragedy
Police records outline a rapid and tragic sequence. On October 6, 2025, an FIR was registered at the Urban Estate police station in Rohtak against IPS officer Y Puran Kumar's gunman, Sushil Kumar, for allegedly demanding a bribe. Sushil Kumar was arrested the very next day, on October 7, 2025. On that same fateful day, IPS officer Y Puran Kumar died by suicide, shooting himself at his residence in Chandigarh's Sector 11.
The case took a dramatic turn with allegations of a conspiracy. The final note left by Puran Kumar and a subsequent complaint filed by his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, claimed that the FIR against his gunman was part of a planned conspiracy. They alleged that deliberate pressure was built on the deceased officer.
In his complaint, Praveen Bansal, a resident of Sector 2 in Rohtak, alleged he was threatened in the name of protection from goons and that a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh was demanded for security. Bansal also provided audio-video recordings and other documents to the investigation team, which are now under scrutiny.
Widening Probe and Pending Chargesheet
The SIT's investigation has cast a wide net. Out of the 14 officers named in Puran Kumar's final note, the SIT has recorded statements from 12 IPS and IAS officers. This list includes former Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapoor. In total, the team has recorded statements from more than 60 people, including senior police officers, family members, close acquaintances, and other key witnesses.
Due to the complexity and scale of the probe, the investigation team earlier informed the court that filing a chargesheet within the standard 60-day period was not possible. The delay was attributed to pending statements from several senior officers and the analysis of technical evidence.
The SIT is meticulously examining evidence from the incident site, call detail records (CDRs), various documents, and all references made in the final note. Sources indicate that the statements of the officers named in the note are considered extremely vital for the investigation, and the future course of action will be determined based on these findings.
