Chain Collision on Dangerous Ghat Section Injures Six in Nandurbar District
In a frightening road accident on Sunday evening, six individuals including the driver and conductor of a state transport bus escaped with minor injuries after a dramatic chain collision on the treacherous Kondaibari Ghat section in Nandurbar district. The incident occurred approximately 60 kilometers from Nandurbar city around 9:30 PM, highlighting once again the dangers of this accident-prone mountainous stretch.
Sequence of Events in the Terrifying Collision
According to police officials, the state transport bus was carrying fifteen passengers and traveling from Pune to Nandurbar when the accident unfolded. As the bus was descending the steep Kondaibari ghat section, a truck traveling behind it crashed into the bus from the rear with significant force.
The impact was so severe that it propelled the bus forward into another truck ahead that was transporting iron rods meant for construction purposes. This secondary collision caused the sharp iron rods to pierce through the body of the bus, creating a dangerous situation for all occupants.
Assistant Inspector Narendra Sable of the Visarwadi police station provided details of the incident, stating that the chain reaction collision could have resulted in far more serious consequences given the nature of the vehicles involved and the hazardous cargo being transported.
Immediate Response and Medical Treatment
Following the collision, all six injured individuals including the bus driver, conductor, and four passengers were promptly transported to the primary health centre located in Visarwadi for necessary medical treatment. Fortunately, all injuries were reported to be minor in nature, though the psychological impact of such a traumatic event cannot be underestimated.
Traffic on the highway was significantly affected for some time as emergency responders worked to clear the accident scene and ensure the safety of other motorists navigating this challenging ghat section after dark.
Legal Action Against Fleeing Truck Driver
The Visarwadi police have registered a formal case against the driver of the truck that initiated the collision by striking the ST bus from behind. The driver reportedly fled the scene after being roughed up by people who witnessed the accident, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.
The case has been filed under multiple sections including Section 281 (rash or negligent driving) and Section 125(A) (act endangering life and personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. Police authorities have confirmed that investigations into the precise circumstances of the accident are currently underway.
Notorious Accident Zone with History of Similar Incidents
The Kondaibari ghat section in Nandurbar district has developed a reputation as a particularly dangerous stretch of road where accidents occur with alarming frequency. Local authorities and transportation experts often attribute these incidents to several factors:
- Steep gradients that challenge vehicle braking systems
- Frequent brake failures in heavily loaded commercial vehicles
- Poor visibility conditions especially during night travel
- Inadequate safety measures on particularly sharp turns
This latest incident serves as yet another reminder of the urgent need for enhanced safety measures, better road engineering, and stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance regulations on such hazardous ghat sections across Maharashtra's mountainous regions.
