SMDA demolishes illegal structures on Kami Road in Sonepat

The Sonepat Metropolitan Development Authority (SMDA) on Thursday carried out a demolition drive targeting illegal structures on Kami Road in the revenue estate of Jawahri village. The action is part of an ongoing campaign against unauthorised construction in the district.

Scope of demolition

According to SMDA District Town Planner (DTP) Neelam Sharma, the team removed an unauthorised boundary wall measuring approximately 170 metres, covering nearly half an acre. Additionally, an illegally constructed shop of around 150 square feet was demolished. The operation followed directions from Deputy Commissioner Neha Singh, who has instructed authorities to curb illegal constructions at their initial stages across the district.

Legal framework and warnings

Sharma emphasised that prior approval from the SMDA Chief Executive Officer is mandatory before any construction activity in a controlled area. She warned that any illegal colony or unauthorised structure can be demolished at any time under the provisions of the Controlled Area Act. The demolition was conducted in the presence of Duty Magistrate Anil Kamboj, an Executive Engineer from the Public Works Department, along with SMDA enforcement officials and police personnel.

Public advisory

The DTP appealed to the public not to purchase plots in unauthorised colonies, noting that such colonies lack basic civic amenities like roads, drinking water, sewerage, and electricity. She urged prospective buyers to verify that a colony has received the necessary statutory approvals before making any purchase.
