Surajkund Mela Proceeds Amid Tragedy as 'Tsunami Swing' Claims Policeman's Life
In the wake of a devastating ride mishap, the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad continues its scheduled operations, even as the amusement ride section remains temporarily shuttered. The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, involved the 'Tsunami swing' and resulted in the death of Inspector Jagdish Prasad, a dedicated officer who was on duty at the event.
Inspector's Heroic Sacrifice and Unfulfilled Plans
Inspector Jagdish Prasad, hailing from Mathura district, had been assigned to the mela from the Police Lines in Palwal since January 31. Colleagues revealed that he was planning to take leave before his impending retirement to oversee house renovations. "But he never made it," lamented his coworkers from Palwal Civil Lines and those stationed with him at the mela.
Special Police Officer Phool Singh shared poignant memories, describing Prasad as "very humble and had a quiet and calm demeanour." Singh recounted, "I would tell him I get scared looking at the swing, and would tell him, despite him being my senior, not to be near it. Every day, some young girl or boy would vomit after the ride. He still went to save the riders. I have no more words." After a postmortem early Sunday morning, Prasad's body was transported to his native village in Mathura for final rites, as confirmed by his son Gaurav Kunjil.
Official Response and Safety Claims
Addressing the media on Sunday afternoon, Ayush Sinha, Deputy Commissioner of Faridabad, and Parth Gupta, Managing Director of the Haryana Tourism Corporation Limited, asserted that all technical checks were rigorously maintained. They emphasized that daily mechanical inspection reports were being submitted. Sinha stated, "The ADC-level 8-member committee probe will look into and address every lapse."
Gupta provided further details, noting that the government is covering the treatment costs for the injured. Of the 12 individuals admitted on Saturday, six were discharged by Sunday morning. He disclosed that the tender for the swing grounds was approximately Rs 1 crore, and an FIR has been filed against Mohd Shakir, the proprietor of Himachal Fun Fair, which operated the amusement rides under the name Jhula Grounds, along with other involved vendors.
Contrasting Views on Safety Protocols
While officials defended the safety measures, an anonymous colleague of the deceased inspector offered a starkly different perspective. "Checking here was only for show and superficial; nothing was thorough," he alleged. He also mentioned that ride operators appeared to have vacated the area following the incident.
Mela Operations and Ongoing Investigation
Despite the closure of the amusement ride area as a precautionary measure, all other segments of the mela remain fully operational. Cultural performances, handicraft stalls, food courts, and entertainment activities are deemed safe by authorities. A comprehensive probe is currently underway to scrutinize the accident and review all safety standards and protocols.
The district administration and Mela Authority reiterated in a Sunday morning statement that the event would proceed as planned, ensuring visitors can still enjoy the vibrant festivities while investigations continue.
