Vijayawada: Even as controversy brews over the alleged custodial death of rowdy-sheeter Sai Krishna, Krishnalanka police inspector Nagaraju, who has since been suspended, is facing fresh allegations in connection with the suicide of another rowdy-sheeter, Perupogu Kranthi Kumar.
Details of the Suicide Case
Kranthi Kumar, son of MRPS activist Perupogu Venkateswara Rao Madiga, died by suicide on May 21 after allegedly consuming pesticide granules. At the time, the incident attracted little public attention. However, weeks later, the case has resurfaced dramatically following the emergence of a selfie video purportedly recorded by Kranthi Kumar before his death. The video went viral on social media on Thursday.
Allegations in the Video
In the purported video, Kranthi Kumar alleged that he was being relentlessly harassed, chased, and assaulted by Nagaraju. He accused the officer of repeatedly targeting him and held him responsible for driving him to suicide. The contents of the video have sparked fresh debate, particularly because the allegations target the same officer, who is already facing intense scrutiny in the Sai Krishna case.
Questions Over Timing
The timing of the video's emergence has raised several questions. While Kranthi Kumar's death occurred nearly a month ago, the recording has surfaced now, bringing renewed attention to the circumstances that preceded his suicide. Interestingly, despite the serious allegations in the video, Kranthi Kumar's family has so far remained silent without demanding action or an investigation.
Criminal Background
Police sources, meanwhile, pointed out that Kranthi Kumar had a criminal history, with around nine cases registered against him in various police stations in and around Vijayawada. However, the video has now shifted focus from his alleged criminal background to the allegations he made before his death.
Political Reaction
Meanwhile, former Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) on Thursday approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alleging serious misconduct by the Vijayawada city police and seeking accountability from senior officers. He also demanded that the NHRC recommend the suspension of NTR district police commissioner SV Rajasekhar Babu.
FIR Details
In the FIR registered following Kranthi Kumar's death, his father Venkateswara Rao stated that his son had a criminal record and was frightened when police officers showed up at their house. According to the complaint, Kranthi Kumar locked himself in the house, recorded a selfie video, and attempted suicide. Venkateswara Rao said he was not at home at the time and rushed back after his wife informed him about the incident over the phone. He then shifted his son to a government hospital, where he succumbed while undergoing treatment on May 21.
