Suspicious CCTV Installations Trigger Security Alert in Sonepat, Haryana
Authorities in Sonepat, Haryana, have launched a high-level investigation following the discovery of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at sensitive public locations under suspicious circumstances. The incidents have raised significant security concerns, particularly after links emerged to a gang arrested in Ghaziabad with alleged connections to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Camera Found at Sonepat Bus Stand
On March 19, 2026, a CCTV camera was reportedly found installed on a tree near the back gate of the Sonepat bus stand. The device, which was functional and secured with tape, prompted immediate action from the Civil Lines police and other officials who rushed to the scene to assess the situation. Sub-Inspector Ashu Rao, the officiating Station House Officer (SHO) of Civil Lines, stated that it was too early to comment on the matter but confirmed that an investigation is actively underway.
Previous Incident at Railway Station
This discovery comes just three days after another CCTV camera was found installed on a pole within the Sonepat railway station premises. The solar-powered camera was positioned on a high pole, enabling it to capture the movement of trains arriving and departing across all platforms. Following this find, the Kaushambi police in Ghaziabad arrested a six-member gang in connection with the case. One of the accused was brought to Sonepat, where he identified the camera on Wednesday, leading to its removal for further forensic analysis.
Links to ISI and Broader Security Implications
The matter gained national attention after the Kaushambi police revealed that the six accused were allegedly installing cameras at sensitive locations across the National Capital Region (NCR). According to reports, live footage from these devices was being transmitted to the Pakistani agency, ISI. This revelation has intensified security protocols in the region, with authorities on high alert for any further suspicious activities. The incidents highlight vulnerabilities in public surveillance systems and underscore the need for enhanced vigilance at transportation hubs and other critical infrastructure points.
As investigations continue, residents and officials in Sonepat remain cautious, with the dual discoveries sparking fears of potential espionage or security breaches. The police are coordinating with multiple agencies to determine the full scope of the surveillance network and ensure public safety.
