Kottayam: Police have registered a case against three individuals in connection with the alleged assault of a minor and forcing him to work at an old-age home in Omalloor, Pathanamthitta. The case was initially filed by Kattappana police following a complaint from a 17-year-old boy from Anakkara, Idukki, and was later transferred to Pathanamthitta police.
Preliminary Findings
During a preliminary inspection, authorities discovered that the boy was forced to work at the facility. Another 17-year-old from Kottayam was also found at the home. According to police, the complainant, who comes from a financially disadvantaged background, was brought to the old-age home by its functionaries with the promise of education. However, the authorities allegedly refused to enroll him in school. When the boy raised the issue, he was allegedly beaten severely on false charges of theft.
Charges Filed
A case has been registered against the facility's manager, Reji, and employees Sijo and Benny under sections related to physical abuse, wrongful confinement, and child labour.
Government Intervention
Women and Child Development Minister Bindu Krishna has directed the Pathanamthitta Child Welfare Officer to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report. Chenneerkkara and Omalloor grama panchayat authorities also carried out inspections at the institution, along with a team led by the District Child Protection Officer.
According to the Pathanamthitta Child Welfare Committee chairperson, the boy has been shifted to a shelter home and is receiving counseling. Primary medical reports indicate he sustained some injuries. A mother and infant who were also found residing at the home were likewise moved to a shelter home.
