Key Suspect in Toronto's Massive Gold Heist Arrested After Returning from Dubai
A major suspect in Toronto's largest gold theft has finally faced authorities. Arsalan Chaudhary, a 43-year-old man, surrendered to police after arriving from Dubai. Peel Regional Police confirm his arrest marks a significant step in the high-profile investigation.
Suspect Turns Himself In Through Legal Arrangement
According to Peel Regional Police Inspector Mike Mavity, Chaudhary arranged his surrender through lawyers upon landing in Canada. "I don't know specifically why he chose to surrender," Mavity told CBC News. The suspect now faces multiple serious charges.
Chaudhary's charges include theft over $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Authorities held him for a bail hearing on Wednesday following his arrest.
Police Issue Strong Warning About Law Enforcement Reach
Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah emphasized what this arrest demonstrates about police capabilities. "Let it be known: no matter where you try to run or hide, we will find you," he stated firmly. His message underscores the determination behind this ongoing investigation.
Seven other suspects have already been arrested in connection with the case. Police continue their investigative work to uncover all aspects of this complex crime.
The Heist That Captivated Canada
The dramatic gold theft occurred on April 17, 2023. Thieves targeted a cargo flight from Zurich carrying substantial valuables. The shipment included 400 kilograms of gold worth over $20 million plus $2.5 million in foreign currency.
Authorities discovered the items missing the following day. The scale of the theft immediately captured national attention and launched one of Canada's most significant criminal investigations.
Two Groups Collaborated in Elaborate Scheme
Police investigation reveals two distinct groups worked together to execute the heist. One group allegedly included airline employees who facilitated the theft from inside Air Canada's cargo operations.
The second group consisted of outside collaborators. Investigators place Chaudhary firmly within this external network. Inspector Mavity explained Chaudhary's suspected role: "Once the gold was removed from Air Canada cargo, he helped, we believe, facilitate the sale and get it ultimately out of Canada."
Chaudhary's Alleged Central Role in Planning
The Crown's statement of allegations describes Chaudhary as heavily involved in planning the theft. Documents obtained by CBC's The Fifth Estate detail his coordination activities.
He allegedly helped arrange another suspect's travel to the United States following the crime. One suspect reportedly referred to Chaudhary as the heist's "top dog," suggesting his leadership position.
Evidence Points to Extensive Involvement
During raids at Chaudhary's apartment, police made significant discoveries. They seized $154,000 in cash along with multiple cellphones and SIM cards. Investigators also found two handwritten lists showing plans to divide approximately $9 million.
Communication records reveal intense activity on the day of the heist. Chaudhary reportedly exchanged calls or messages with other suspects 772 times during that critical period.
After the theft, one suspect messaged Chaudhary on WhatsApp expressing excitement. The messages included "I'm so happy for you Bro" and "I can't even sleep, lol." Chaudhary allegedly responded simply: "It's insane."
Investigation Continues with More Suspects Sought
Police have issued a warrant for a 27-year-old man from Brampton connected to the case. Two other suspects remain at large, including a former Air Canada employee believed to have participated.
The ongoing investigation continues to reveal the sophisticated planning behind this operation. Law enforcement demonstrates clear determination to bring all involved parties to justice.
This case highlights both the scale of organized crime operations and the persistent efforts of Canadian authorities to combat such criminal activities. The arrest of Chaudhary represents a crucial development, but the pursuit of justice continues.
