Trichy Police Arrest Seven in Connection with Patient Death at De-addiction Center
Trichy police made seven arrests on Monday in a shocking case linked to the death of a patient at a private de-addiction center near Jeeyapuram. Authorities have since shut down the facility, known as the Jaithra Foundation Deaddiction cum Rehabilitation Centre in Adavathur.
Details of the Arrested Individuals
Police took into custody the managing director, warden, and several staff members. The arrested include:
- Managing director D Manikandan, 50, from Pandamangalam in Woraiyur
- Warden S Manimaran, 29, from Maruti Nagar in No 1 Tollgate
- Four staff members: M Periyasamy, 34, from Adavathur; M Krishnamurthy, 30, from Koothur; C Arivumani, 45, from Pattukottai; and M Abisheik, 27, from Thiruvaiyaru
- P Suryaprakash, 28, from Appanallur
Victim's Background and Admission
The deceased patient was S Vijayakumar, a 48-year-old resident of Pammal in Kanchipuram district. Police reports indicate that Vijayakumar had been living separately from his wife for the past five years. During this period, he developed an alcohol addiction and frequently clashed with family members.
In June 2025, his family admitted him to a private rehabilitation center in Thanjavur. After discharge, he relapsed into alcohol use. On January 8, they admitted him to the Jaithra Foundation Deaddiction Centre at Adavathur.
Events Leading to the Death
On January 10, center staff shifted Vijayakumar to Trichy MGM Government Hospital due to his deteriorating health. They informed his brother, S Muthukumar, 50, from Tiruvarur district. When family members reached the hospital, they noticed injuries on Vijayakumar's body.
Despite receiving medical treatment, Vijayakumar died on Monday morning. Suspecting foul play, the family filed a formal complaint with the Somarasampettai police.
Investigation Findings and Charges
The police investigation revealed a brutal assault. Authorities determined that the managing director, warden, and staff members attacked Vijayakumar with sticks and pipes. These actions caused fatal injuries.
Police arrested the accused under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges include sections 191(2), 191(3), 296(b), 115(2), 118(1), 105, and 49. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
