Wife Alleges Detention Without Information
Reena Rai, wife of Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai, alleged in a video statement late Monday night that her husband had been detained by police in Ayodhya. She claimed that the family had not been informed about his whereabouts, expressing fear for his safety.
According to Reena Rai, Ajay Rai had traveled to Ayodhya to raise concerns over the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram temple. He was also scheduled to offer prayers at the temple alongside other Congress leaders.
"Today, when he was staying at a hotel in Ayodhya, he was taken into custody. We have not been informed where he has been taken. The family is worried, and we fear for his safety," she alleged.
No Official Response from Ayodhya Police
As of late Monday, there was no official statement from Ayodhya Police regarding the incident. The Congress party earlier stated that Rai had been placed under house arrest at a hotel in Ayodhya on Monday evening.
The party had announced that a high-level delegation, led by Rai, would visit Ayodhya on Tuesday to offer prayers at the Ram temple amid the ongoing controversy over alleged embezzlement of donations at the shrine.
Congress Delegation Plans Disrupted
The proposed delegation was to include Congress MPs Kishori Lal Sharma, Rakesh Rathor, Ujjwal Raman Singh, and Tanuj Punia, along with several senior party leaders. The visit was intended to highlight the party's stance on the donation controversy.
Earlier on Monday, Uttar Pradesh minister Dayashankar Singh criticized the proposed visit, alleging that opposition leaders neither believed in Lord Ram nor had contributed to the construction of the Ram temple. He questioned their intent behind raising the issue.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy surrounds allegations of misappropriation of donations collected for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The Congress party has been demanding a probe into the matter, with Rai's visit aimed at drawing attention to the issue.
Ajay Rai's detention has sparked political tensions, with the Congress party accusing the state government of suppressing dissent. The family's appeal for information about his whereabouts remains unanswered by authorities.
