Ludhiana: A striking utility worker was left with a fractured nose after an angry, drunken mob bashed him up for refusing to verify that their electricity had been restored, Punjab police said.
Incident Details
Sukhwinder Singh, an employee of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), and a colleague had just repaired a faulty neighbourhood transformer in Ludhiana’s Gian Chand Nagar at midnight on June 8 when the residents intercepted them.
The suspects alleged the power was still out and demanded Sukhwinder Singh accompany them to their homes. When he refused and suggested they check the supply themselves, the men began abusing and hitting him. One of the attackers left briefly and returned with an armed mob of 10 masked accomplices carrying blunt weapons, who then escalated the assault.
Police Response
The Koom Kalan police department filed a first-information report on Thursday — 10 days after the attack — following sustained pressure from the victim and senior utility executives.
Police named three suspects — Raj Gupta, Arun, and Abhishek — alongside 10 unidentified accomplices. The men face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for armed rioting, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, and causing injuries.
Assistant sub-inspector Surinder Kumar said the case had been registered following a formal verification process. No arrests have been made so far.
