In a significant victory for law enforcement, the Chowk Police in Varanasi have successfully solved a high-value gold jewellery theft and recovered the entire stolen property worth a staggering Rs 3 crore. The police team arrested five individuals in connection with the daring heist that took place at a showroom in the historic Chowk area.
The Heist and The Swift Police Response
The crime came to light on January 6, when a formal written complaint was lodged at the Chowk police station. The complainant reported that a massive theft of gold jewellery had occurred at their showroom a day earlier, on January 5. The stolen items were valued in crores of rupees, prompting immediate action from the authorities.
Acting swiftly, the police registered a case under the relevant Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). To lead the investigation, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police T Sarvanan constituted a dedicated special team. The pressure was on to track down the culprits and recover the precious haul.
Cracking the Case: Digital Footprints and Informer Tips
The investigative team left no stone unturned in their pursuit. A crucial part of the probe involved meticulously examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in the vicinity of the crime scene. Furthermore, the police leveraged technology by analyzing data from the Command Center of the Commissionerate Varanasi and obtaining BTS (Base Transceiver Station) data through the surveillance cell to trace movements.
The breakthrough, however, came from a combination of this digital evidence and classic police work. Acting on a critical tip provided by a special police informer, the team zeroed in on the suspects. This led to the coordinated arrest of the five accused individuals.
The Accused and The Staggering Recovery
The police apprehended the five men from different locations, highlighting the interstate nature of the crime. The arrested accused are:
- Deepesh Chauhan from Jaunpur
- Vikas Benvanshi from Ghazipur
- Shubham Vishwakarma from Ghazipur
- Sainuddin Ansari from Ghazipur
- Tarak Ghorai from Paschimi Medinipur in West Bengal
Most impressively, the police achieved a 100% recovery of the stolen jewellery. The recovered treasure, weighing a total of 2122 grams, is a testament to the heist's scale and includes an exquisite collection of items:
- 20 exquisite necklaces
- 30 pairs of glittering earrings

Pleased with the exemplary work of the police team, Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for the officers involved. This case stands out not only for the sheer value of the recovered items but also for the efficiency and speed with which it was cracked, delivering a strong message about the capabilities of the Varanasi police.
The successful investigation, combining technological surveillance with human intelligence, has ensured that the stolen property will be returned to its rightful owner. The five accused now face legal proceedings as the case moves forward in the judicial system.
