A tragic accident in Ghaziabad claimed the lives of a woman and her 12-year-old niece when a UP Roadways bus ran them over at the busy Mohan Nagar junction. Police reported that the driver failed to apply the brakes because a water bottle kept near his feet had rolled underneath and jammed them.
Incident Details
The driver, identified as Dinesh Kumar, has been arrested and the bus has been seized. The accident occurred around 2pm on Thursday when Sarvesh (45) and her niece Kushi were crossing the road. According to investigators, the driver could not stop the vehicle in time due to the water bottle obstructing the brake pedal.
ACP Sahibabad Amit Saxena stated that the deceased did not use the footbridge and were attempting to cross the road by dodging fast-moving vehicles on a wide road. They were on their way to attend Sarvesh's brother's wedding in Bulandshahr. After stepping out of an auto-rickshaw, they were approaching a bus heading to Bulandshahr when the UP Roadways bus struck them from behind, crushing them and then ramming into the other bus.
Police Response
Locals informed the police and rushed the victims to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. An FIR was registered under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (death due to negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sahibabad police station.
The ACP mentioned that locals vandalized the bus after the incident, and the driver initially escaped but was later tracked down and arrested. Police noted that jaywalking is common in the area despite the availability of a footbridge, leading to many near-fatal accidents near the junction.
Second Accident
In a separate incident, a 46-year-old woman was killed and her husband injured when a truck hit their bike from behind near Sudarshan Hospital on GT Road in Sihani Gate. The deceased, Kalpana Arya, and her husband Nigrah Arya (53) were residents of Nehru Nagar.
Nigrah Arya reported that around 9:30pm on Thursday, they were traveling from Bhatia Mod bridge towards Rakesh Marg when a speeding truck rammed their motorcycle. The impact threw Kalpana off the bike, and she succumbed to her injuries during treatment. ACP Nandgram Ziauddin Ahmad confirmed that an FIR was registered under sections 281 and 106 of BNS at Sihani Gate police station, and the truck driver has been arrested.
