WBHRC orders inquiry into police humiliation of accused

The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has ordered an inquiry into a complaint filed by the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights joint President Ranjit Sur. The complaint alleges that officers of Golabari, Sibpur, and Sankrail police stations made accused persons march in public in a humiliating manner, wearing only innerwear with ropes tied around their waists.

The complaint, filed on May 26, 2026, referenced a newspaper report about the incident. After reviewing the complaint, the Commission observed that a prima facie case had been established and admitted the petition.

The Commission noted that a similar complaint had already been entertained on June 2, 2026, in case No. 1894/25/0/2026, and directed that Sur's complaint be tagged with that matter. The Commission has directed its investigation wing, headed by Superintendent of Police Pinaki Ranjan Das, to conduct an investigation in the same manner as ordered in the earlier case and submit a preliminary report by June 20, 2026. The state has also been directed to extend assistance.

The matter has been listed before the same Bench on June 23, 2026.
