Woman Dies by Suicide After Husband's Death

In a tragic outcome of fractured family ties, a 25-year-old woman who had married against her family's wishes died by suicide in Surat, leaving behind a one-year-old daughter. Police and relatives of her late husband stepped in to cremate her and take custody of the child.

Cremation and Custody Arrangements

Reena Baraiya was cremated on Saturday by the family of her late husband's elder brother, Batuk, who also took custody of her one-year-old daughter after obtaining police approval. The child had been left orphaned with no immediate guardian available.

Baraiya consumed poison at a guest house in Varachha on June 16 and alerted her father over the phone. Guest house staff, who overheard the conversation, called for medical help. She was shifted to SMIMER Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her one-year-old daughter was with her at the time.

Background of the Incident

Police said Baraiya's husband, Akshay, died four months ago. The couple had married three years ago, but both families had severed ties as they did not approve of the love marriage. After Akshay's death, police suspect Baraiya felt isolated and took the extreme step.

Police Intervention and Child's Welfare

Ashwinikumar police personnel extended support beyond routine procedures. “The police team ensured the child’s immediate safety and wellbeing by arranging food, clothing and a medical check-up. Officers also provided comfort and reassurance to the child and took steps to secure her future,” said H B Patel, police inspector, Ashwini Kumar police station.

Until a lawful guardian was identified, the girl was placed in a shelter for care and protection. On Saturday, Batuk came forward to take responsibility for her upbringing. After completing verification and legal procedures, police handed over custody to him.

“Police provided an NOC to the children’s home where the child was kept. The family also accepted Baraiya’s body and cremated her,” a police official said.
