Woman, locals foil robbery bid in Sonipat, catch suspects

A woman and local residents foiled an alleged robbery attempt in Sonipat on Thursday morning after two motorcycle-borne youths allegedly threw chilli powder into her eyes and tried to snatch her bag, only to be caught when their motorcycle failed to start.

According to police, the incident took place around 7.30 am near Rawal Hospital in the City Industrial Area when the woman was returning home after offering prayers at a temple. The two suspects, riding a motorcycle without a registration plate, allegedly intercepted her and attempted to rob her.

Despite the attack, the woman raised an alarm, drawing the attention of passers-by and nearby residents. As more people gathered, the suspects allegedly tried to flee but were overpowered after their motorcycle reportedly failed to start.

Police said the two accused, identified as Anil alias Leela of Khanda village in Kharkhoda and Ashish alias Ashu of Sehri village, were taken into custody and the motorcycle used in the incident was seized.

According to police PRO Ravinder Singh, preliminary investigation revealed that Anil has at least eight criminal cases registered against him, including cases of murder, attempt to murder and robbery, while Ashish is also reported to have links to a murder case. Both will be produced before a court.

Videos circulating on social media showed local residents tying the two men to an electric pole before police arrived.
