A 40-year-old construction worker was fatally assaulted by a fellow worker at a house construction site in Velandipalayam on the outskirts of Coimbatore on Friday night. The deceased has been identified as K Ravindran, 40, a resident of Kovilmedu in Coimbatore. The suspect, A Mani, 50, from Omalur in Salem district, was living and working at the site with his wife.
Incident Details
According to police sources, Mani had brought Ravindran from the Kovilmedu junction on Friday morning to work at the site. After Ravindran completed his work in the afternoon, Mani paid him Rs 750 as his daily wage. Around 8 pm, Mani went to a nearby Tasmac outlet to consume alcohol. When he returned to the construction site around 8:30 pm, he allegedly found Ravindran lying with his wife. Enraged, Mani assaulted Ravindran and chased him out of the premises.
Escalation and Fatal Attack
However, around 9 pm, Ravindran returned to the site and picked a quarrel with Mani. The argument quickly escalated, during which Mani picked up a log and repeatedly struck Ravindran on his head and face. Ravindran suffered severe injuries and died on the spot. Mani then dragged the body and abandoned it on the side of Thadagam Road, right in front of a building materials shop.
Police Response
A passerby who saw the body informed the Saibaba Colony police. Police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Police registered a case and arrested Mani. He was remanded in judicial custody.
