Wedding Dance Turns Deadly: Youth Shot in Rohtas District Altercation
In a tragic incident that has shocked the local community, a 24-year-old youth was shot dead during a wedding celebration in Dhodhandih village, located under the Suryapura police station area of Rohtas district. The fatal shooting occurred in the early hours of Saturday, casting a dark shadow over what was meant to be a joyous occasion.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The victim, identified as Vir Bahadur Singh, lost his life around 5am during a dance performance by a woman artist at the wedding festivities. According to police reports, a heated verbal altercation erupted between Singh and a close friend who had joined him on stage. The dispute escalated rapidly, culminating in the friend allegedly firing three rounds at point-blank range. The bullets pierced Singh’s forehead, killing him instantly on the spot.
Police officers from four neighbouring stations, led by DSP Bikramganj Sindhu Shekhar Singh, swiftly arrived at the scene to secure the area. During their investigation, they recovered a spent shell and the victim’s personal belongings. The body was subsequently sent to Sasaram’s Sadar Hospital for an autopsy, while a massive manhunt has been launched to apprehend the accused, who remains at large.
Alarming Trend of Celebratory Firing
This incident highlights a disturbing pattern in Rohtas district, where deaths due to celebratory firing, especially during the wedding season, have become alarmingly common. Police records indicate that despite repeated directives from the state police headquarters, preventive measures at the local level often remain inadequate, leading to frequent loss of lives.
In a similar case on November 30 last year, Nandan Kumar Singh, a resident of Chilhar village under the Itathi police station area and a teacher posted in Buxar district, was killed during celebratory firing at a wedding in Thanua village under the Sheosagar police station area. The deceased had attended his maternal cousin’s wedding, and the incident occurred during the ‘Jaimala ceremony’. An FIR was lodged against six persons in connection with that case.
The recurrence of such violent episodes underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety protocols and community awareness to prevent further tragedies during celebratory events.
