66-Year-Old Woman Strangled, Body Found in Gunny Sack in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai: A 66-year-old woman was murdered by strangulation, and her body was stuffed into a gunny sack and dumped near a streetlight about 300 metres from her residence in the Shivshakti Nagar slum colony along KKR road in Turbhe store area. The incident came to light early Tuesday morning. The Turbhe police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) for murder against an unidentified accused.

Victim Identified

The deceased has been identified as Azrunnisa Abdul Waheed Khan, a resident of room number 3801 in Shivshakti Nagar, KKR road, Turbhe store area, along the Thane-Belapur road. The case was registered following a complaint filed by her son, Abdul Hamid Wahid Khan (41).

Sequence of Events

According to the investigating officer, Police Inspector (Administration) Gajanan Kadam, the victim left her home around 5:30 pm on Monday to purchase groceries. When she failed to return home by late night, her son Abdul initiated a search but could not locate her. Consequently, he lodged a missing person complaint on Monday night. Around 3:00 am on Tuesday, her body was discovered stuffed in a gunny sack near a blue barrel placed under a streetlight in front of house number 265 in Shivshakti Nagar, approximately 300 metres from her home. The post-mortem examination confirmed that she died due to strangulation.

Investigation and Suspected Motive

Police have reviewed CCTV footage, which shows Khan walking along the Thane-Belapur road around 5:45 pm on Monday. After that, she was not captured by any cameras. The complainant stated that his mother was wearing gold ornaments at the time of her disappearance, and these items are now missing. Based on this, the murder motive is suspected to be robbery, though this has not yet been confirmed. Authorities are also exploring other possible angles for the crime. Investigators believe that the woman was likely murdered at a different location, and her body was subsequently dumped by the unidentified accused after midnight.

Further investigations are underway, and the police are examining additional evidence to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
