The Indian government announced two significant appointments in top security agencies on Wednesday. Senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal takes charge as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency. Former Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor becomes the new chief of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
Rakesh Aggarwal's Appointment to NIA
Rakesh Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, receives the formal appointment as NIA Director General. He had been handling the additional charge of this position since last month. His predecessor Sadanand Vasant Date returned to his parent cadre in Maharashtra.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Aggarwal's tenure. He will serve as NIA chief until August 31, 2028. This date marks his superannuation from service. The Department of Personnel and Training issued the official order confirming this appointment.
Shatrujeet Kapoor's New Role at ITBP
Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, a 1990-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, assumes leadership of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. He succeeds Praveen Kumar, who now moves to head the Border Security Force. The Appointments Committee cleared Kapoor's appointment until October 31, 2026, his superannuation date.
Kapoor previously served as Haryana's Director General of Police. He left that position last month amid controversy. The suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar had prompted his leave two months earlier. Following his DGP tenure, Kapoor worked as Chairman of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation.
Background of the Appointments
Kapoor originally became Haryana DGP in August 2023 during Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's administration. His appointment at that time superseded two senior 1989-batch IPS officers, Mohd Akhil and R C Mishra.
Meanwhile, Praveen Kumar, the outgoing ITBP chief, transitions to lead the Border Security Force. Kumar is a 1993-batch IPS officer from the West Bengal cadre. His appointment as BSF chief extends until September 30, 2030, his retirement date.
These strategic appointments fill crucial leadership positions in India's security infrastructure. The government aims to ensure continuity in counter-terrorism and border security operations through these experienced IPS officers.
