Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit officially assumed the position of Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force on Wednesday, while Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain took charge as the Vice Chief of the Indian Army, marking a significant leadership transition in India's defence hierarchy.
Lt Gen Sandeep Jain's Extensive Career
Lt Gen Jain, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, was commissioned into the MAHAR Regiment in June 1988. With nearly four decades of distinguished service, he has held a wide range of command and staff appointments across diverse operational environments, according to official sources.
His command experience includes leading an Infantry Battalion, serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, and commanding an infantry brigade in a Strike Corps, a Counter Insurgency Force, and a Pivot Corps in the Northern Command. His operational tenure spans participation in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, multiple postings in high-altitude areas, and counter-insurgency operations along the Line of Control and in the North East. Prior to his new role, Lt Gen Jain served as the Southern Army Commander.
Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit's Expertise
Air Marshal Dixit, a fighter pilot with over 3,500 hours of flying experience, is now the senior-most officer in line to succeed the current IAF Chief, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, who is set to superannuate in October 2026. His previous appointment was as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, a tri-services organisation under the Chief of Defence Staff, where he contributed to enhancing jointness and establishing theatre commands.
His flying expertise spans multiple aircraft, including the Mirage-2000, MiG variants, Jaguar, Tejas, Hawk, and transport aircraft like the AN-32 and Avro. He is an experimental test pilot and a qualified flying instructor. Over his nearly four-decade career, Air Marshal Dixit has been actively involved in operations such as Operation Safed Sagar during the 1999 Kargil conflict and Operation Sindoor in 2025. He has commanded a frontline fighter air base in the Western Sector, a premier fighter training base in the Southern Sector, served as Directing Staff at the Air Force Test Pilots School, and commanded the Central Air Command.
Impact on Defence Leadership
These appointments come at a critical time as the Indian military continues to pursue greater integration and jointness among the services. Air Marshal Dixit's experience in tri-services coordination is expected to further these efforts, while Lt Gen Jain's diverse operational background will bring valuable insights to the army's leadership.
