The annual Amarnath Yatra resumed on Saturday, July 25, after being suspended for six days due to adverse weather conditions. The pilgrimage, which was halted on July 19 due to heavy rain and landslides, recommenced from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu.
According to officials, over 3,500 pilgrims departed in the first batch on Saturday morning. The weather in the region has shown significant improvement, allowing authorities to give the green light for the yatra to proceed.
Background of Suspension
The yatra was suspended on July 19 as a precautionary measure after continuous heavy rainfall triggered landslides along the pilgrimage route, particularly in the areas of Pahalgam and Baltal. No casualties were reported during the suspension period. Authorities had been monitoring the situation closely and decided to resume operations only after assessing the route safety.
Pilgrims Eager to Continue Journey
Pilgrims gathered at the base camp early Saturday expressed relief and enthusiasm as the yatra resumed. Many had been waiting for days for the announcement. "We are thankful to the administration for ensuring our safety. The weather has cleared, and we are ready to proceed," said a pilgrim from Delhi.
Safety Measures and Route Conditions
Officials stated that all necessary safety measures are in place, including deployment of additional personnel along the route and clearance of debris from landslides. The Jammu and Kashmir administration, in coordination with the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, has been working round the clock to maintain the route and provide amenities to pilgrims. The yatra, which started on July 1, continues to see a steady flow of devotees despite the weather disruption.
