Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday emphasized that for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, the nation and its students are far more significant than any personal position. His remarks came in the wake of veteran leader Jual Oram's resignation from the post of Odisha BJP president, which Shah described as a reflection of the party's commitment to duty over office.
Shah's Statement on Party Priorities
Addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Shah said, "For every BJP worker, the country and its students are far more important than any position. Our party has always prioritized national interest and the welfare of the youth above all." He reiterated that Pradhan's decision to step down was voluntary and driven by a desire to focus on grassroots work and the education sector.
Pradhan's Resignation Context
Jual Pradhan, who was appointed Odisha BJP chief in 2024, resigned last Thursday citing personal reasons. However, sources indicated that he wanted to dedicate more time to his role as the Union Education Minister, a portfolio he holds at the Centre. Shah praised Pradhan's tenure, noting that the party had registered significant growth in Odisha under his leadership, including winning two Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 general elections.
Impact on Odisha Politics
The resignation has sparked speculation about the BJP's strategy in Odisha, a state where the party has been trying to expand its footprint. Shah assured that the party would announce Pradhan's successor soon, emphasizing that the organizational structure remains strong. "Our workers are committed to serving the people, and changes in positions are routine in a democratic organization like ours," he added.
Focus on Education and Youth
Shah also highlighted the government's achievements in the education sector under Pradhan's leadership. He mentioned the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the expansion of higher education opportunities for students from marginalized communities. "The Education Ministry has been working tirelessly to ensure that every student gets access to quality education, and Jual ji has been instrumental in this," Shah said.
Reactions from Political Circle
Opposition parties have criticized the timing of Pradhan's resignation, with some alleging internal dissent within the Odisha BJP. However, Shah dismissed these claims, stating that the party is united and focused on developmental work. "Those making baseless allegations should look at the progress we have made in Odisha. Our government has brought numerous schemes for farmers, women, and youth," he countered.
Future Course
Pradhan's resignation is seen as a move to concentrate on national responsibilities, especially in the education ministry. Shah indicated that the party would soon initiate a membership drive and organizational restructuring in Odisha to strengthen its base ahead of the 2029 assembly elections.
