Amit Shah Conducts Comprehensive Security Review of India-Nepal Border in Seemanchal
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kishanganj district on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a significant three-day visit to Bihar's strategically crucial Seemanchal region. His primary focus was a thorough review of security and management along the approximately 700-kilometer-long India-Nepal border area, which has gained heightened importance due to recent geopolitical developments.
High-Level Meetings and Strategic Discussions
Upon his arrival at Purnia airport, Shah was warmly welcomed by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Minister Leshi Singh, and BJP state chief Sanjay Saraogi. He proceeded to Kishanganj by helicopter, where he immediately engaged with district officials and security personnel at the collectorate in the evening.
Shah chaired a critical meeting with the Land Ports Authority of India, attended by Union Home Secretary and other senior officials. The discussions highlighted Raxaul, one of India's 15 land ports on the Nepal border, as a key point of focus. During this high-level review, Shah sought detailed feedback on multiple strategic issues from district administration representatives and senior officers of central security agencies, including the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Border Security Force (BSF).
Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai and Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary were also present at these deliberations. Sources revealed that the conversations centered on enhancing monitoring systems along the international border and addressing region-specific security challenges. Particular emphasis was placed on improving intelligence sharing mechanisms, implementing technology-driven surveillance solutions, and fostering tighter coordination between central security forces and the state administration.
Political Engagements and Electoral Considerations
Later in the evening, Shah interacted with BJP leaders to discuss organizational strategy and regional electoral considerations. These discussions were particularly significant in view of the upcoming assembly elections in neighboring West Bengal, indicating the political dimensions of his visit beyond pure security matters.
Thursday's Agenda: Border Infrastructure and Development
On Thursday, Shah's itinerary includes a visit to Araria district, where he will inaugurate the Letti border outpost campus on the Nepal border and participate in a programme dedicated to border security. Subsequently, a meeting is scheduled with the chief secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and district magistrates of the seven border districts in the region.
During these engagements, the Home Minister is expected to discuss the current situation in border areas and potentially announce funds under the central government's Vibrant Villages Programme. Shah will also assess the progress of this ambitious programme, which aims to develop roads and infrastructure in border villages, improve education and health facilities, promote tourism, and raise local employment and living standards.
Strategic Importance and Regional Context
The Seemanchal region holds tremendous strategic importance from India's security perspective, particularly due to its proximity to the sensitive 'Chicken's Neck' region. Meanwhile, reports have emerged about new settlements and religious sites springing up in Nepal's Parsa and Bara areas. Additionally, Chinese activity was recently reported in Rautahat, Nepal, which borders India's Sitamarhi district, adding another layer of complexity to border management.
JD(U) national spokesman Rajeev Ranjan Prasad commented that after successfully addressing left-wing extremism, the government has now set a target to identify illegal infiltrators in the country, highlighting the broader security context of Shah's visit.
This comprehensive visit underscores the government's commitment to strengthening border security while simultaneously promoting development in frontier regions through initiatives like the Vibrant Villages Programme.
