Amit Shah Conducts High-Level Security Review in Bihar's Seemanchal Region
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Purnia on Thursday evening as part of his three-day visit to the Seemanchal region of Bihar. His schedule includes a crucial high-level meeting on Friday morning with Army officers, senior officials, and the Director General of Police (DGP) to assess and address pressing issues such as infiltration, crime, and smuggling in this sensitive border area.
Infrastructure and Border Security Initiatives
Prior to his arrival in Purnia, Shah attended inauguration and foundation-laying ceremonies for several projects related to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Araria. During these events, he provided an update on the India-Nepal Border Roads Project, noting that work has been completed on 14 out of the 18 stretches of the 554-kilometer border road approved under this initiative. Shah emphasized that the completion of this road project will significantly enhance the surveillance capabilities of SSB personnel, bolstering security along the border.
In Araria, Shah chaired a review meeting focusing on matters concerning the India-Nepal border and the implementation of the Vibrant Villages Programme-II. He highlighted strategic concerns specific to Bihar, underscoring the critical importance of robust infrastructure and constant vigilance in border regions to maintain national security.
Vibrant Villages Programme and Government Priorities
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary elaborated on the efforts of the NDA government, stating that it is actively strengthening infrastructure, culture, tourism, livelihoods, and economic development in border villages through the Vibrant Villages Programme. He affirmed, "The security and all-round development of border villages is a priority for the Modi government."
Shah provided historical context on the SSB, explaining that it was originally known as the Special Service Bureau and was tasked with preserving and promoting the cultural identity and heritage of border villages. He detailed its evolving responsibilities: "During Atal Ji's government, SSB was responsible for the security of the Nepal-Bhutan border. In 2001, the security of the 1,751-kilometer-long unfenced India-Nepal border came under the responsibility of SSB. From 2004, the responsibility of security of the 699-kilometer-long Bhutan border was also given to SSB."
Beyond border security, Shah stressed that the SSB must maintain strict vigilance against smuggling, narcotics, and other illegal activities to ensure comprehensive protection of the region.
Prime Minister's Vision and Community Welfare
Shah further highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to improving village conditions under both Vibrant Villages Programme-I and II, setting ambitious targets for development. He reiterated that it is a top priority of the Modi government to ensure that soldiers and their families receive all possible facilities, reflecting a holistic approach to national security and community welfare.
Earlier in his visit, Shah offered prayers at the Hanuman Temple in East Pali, Kishanganj, showcasing his engagement with local cultural and religious practices during his tour of the Seemanchal region.
