Indian Army Embarks on Decisive Decade of Technological Transformation
In Pune, Southern Army Commander Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth declared on Monday that the Indian Army is entering a pivotal decade of profound transformation. This evolution is propelled by the rapid assimilation of cutting-edge technologies and is firmly anchored in the principle of atmanirbharta, or self-reliance.
Technology as a Strategic Determinant of National Power
Addressing the 32nd foundation day celebration of the Army Institute of Technology (AIT), Lt Gen Seth emphasized that technology has transcended its role as a mere operational enabler. He asserted that it has now emerged as a strategic determinant of national power, economic competitiveness, and military capability.
"Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, quantum systems, robotics, cyber capabilities, and data analytics are reshaping warfare, industry, and society alike," he stated. "For the Indian Army, this decade will be decisive in how effectively we assimilate and integrate these capabilities."
Future Conflicts and Indigenous Innovation
Referring to recent deliberations at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the Army commander highlighted that future conflicts will be defined by speed, precision, information dominance, and indigenous innovation. He stressed that academic institutions like AIT play a critical role in strengthening the nation's technological and military preparedness.
"As the Army advances towards self-reliance, the research, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit emerging from academic institutions will directly contribute to building indigenous capabilities and enhancing national resilience," Lt Gen Seth explained.
AIT's Legacy and Student Values
Highlighting AIT's journey over nearly three decades, he noted that the institute reflects the Army Welfare Education Society's vision to provide quality professional education to the wards of Army personnel while nurturing leadership, discipline, and character.
Addressing the students, Lt Gen Seth reminded them of their unique legacy of service. "Most of you come from families where service before self is a way of life. As you move into diverse careers, carry these values with pride, integrity, courage, and a deep sense of duty to the nation," he urged.
Call for Societal Impact and Lifelong Learning
He encouraged young engineers to look beyond personal success and focus on creating meaningful societal impact. "In India's journey towards Viksit Bharat, your ideas, character, and commitment will be decisive. Dream big, innovate boldly, but ensure your knowledge creates positive change," he added.
The army commander further elaborated that future leaders will be distinguished not merely by technical expertise, but by the quality of thinking, curiosity, and the courage to challenge convention. He called upon students to pursue lifelong learning and innovation with integrity.
Innovative Projects and Honored Guest
Lt Gen Seth also interacted with students who presented their innovative projects on the occasion. The event featured Anu Aga, chairperson of Thermax Ltd, as the guest of honor. She was conferred with a lifetime achievement award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to industry, innovation, and social work.
The celebration underscored the synergy between military strategy, technological advancement, and educational excellence, positioning the Indian Army for a transformative decade ahead.
