By evening, traffic on the C-Hexagon near India Gate, Mandi House, and Mathura Road nearly ground to a complete halt, creating a massive gridlock that affected thousands of commuters.
Commuters Face Lengthy Delays and Frustration
On Google Maps, the affected routes glowed an unrelenting red, with the estimated travel time indicator continuously climbing. Ishani, a commuter traveling from Chanakyapuri to ITO, left at 3:30 pm and initially expected to arrive by 4:07 pm. However, she found herself stationary near Mandi House for nearly 20 minutes, ultimately reaching her destination at 4:25 pm. "Most of the time, we were just standing in one spot," she recounted, highlighting the extent of the congestion.
Social Media Flooded with Complaints and Criticisms
As the gridlock persisted, frustration spilled onto social media platforms, where users shared their experiences and voiced concerns. One user wrote, "So much congestion around India Gate. Stuck here for half an hour and the car hasn't moved even 10 metres." Another posted, "Complete jam for the last 30 minutes on Mathura Road from Oberoi Hotel to Bharat Mandapam." Several commuters also flagged issues with traffic management, with one person noting, "Entire India Gate radial choked, so many vehicles parked wrongly, blocking half the road. Huge traffic jam due to Bar Council elections. Cops standing helplessly. Not to mention the littering."
