Kolkata: The Bengal government on Saturday formally took possession of Petrapole police station from the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI), marking the end of prolonged administrative and political hurdles that had stalled its operational takeover since its inauguration three years ago.
Though the modern police facility — located near the India-Bangladesh border at Bongaon in North 24 Parganas — was inaugurated by Union home minister Amit Shah on May 9, 2023, the previous state government had not taken over the facility despite it being built under a central government project.
The ceremony was attended by state food and cooperative affairs minister Ashok Kirtania, ADG South Bengal Rajesh Kumar Singh, IG Barasat Range Amit P Javalgi and Bongaon Police District SP Bidisha Kalita Dasgupta. Petrapole police station will continue to function under Bongaon Police District.
“The transfer reflects the continued cooperation between the state and central governments in implementing public infrastructure projects,” Kirtania said.
The new facility is equipped with disabled-friendly infrastructure and lift facilities, ensuring improved accessibility and public service delivery, SP Dasgupta said.
