BJP Leads in West Bengal, but TMC Wins Basanti Seat

NEW DELHI: In the recently concluded West Bengal assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained a broader edge across the state. However, in the Basanti constituency, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) emerged victorious. Nilima Mistry Bishal secured 1,27,495 votes, defeating BJP candidate Bikash Sardar by a massive margin of 56,181 votes. She stayed well ahead throughout the counting process.

Basanti Constituency Details

Basanti is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a Scheduled Caste category seat located in the South 24 Parganas district. The constituency is part of the Jaynagar parliamentary constituency, which includes seven assembly segments.

In the 2021 assembly election, Shyamal Mondal from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat. Earlier, Gobinda Chandra Naskar, also from AITC, had won in 2016, while Subhas Naskar from the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) held the seat from 1982 to 2011, when he came runner-up to Gobinda Naskar.

Vote Share Analysis

In the 2021 assembly election, AITC secured 52.11% of the vote share, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which fielded Ramesh Majhi, received 28.43% of the votes.
