The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has escalated its political offensive against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with senior leader and Member of Parliament Sambit Patra alleging that Gandhi spent nearly Rs 60 crore on 54 foreign trips over a span of 22 years. Patra questioned the source of funding for these travels, pointing out that Gandhi's declared income is significantly lower than the alleged expenditure.
Allegations of Funding Irregularities
Speaking at a press conference, Patra demanded clarity on whether the trips were funded personally by Gandhi, by the government, or by foreign entities. He also warned that the matter could have implications under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), which governs the acceptance of foreign funds by individuals and organizations in India.
Political Context
The remarks have intensified the ongoing political clash between the BJP and Congress, with both parties trading accusations ahead of key elections. The BJP has often targeted Rahul Gandhi over his travel habits and alleged lack of transparency regarding his finances.
Congress leaders have dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, accusing the BJP of diverting attention from pressing national issues. They have challenged Patra to provide concrete evidence to support his claims.
This development adds another layer to the heated political discourse in India, as the ruling party and the opposition continue to spar over matters of accountability and governance.
