The Viksit Bharat Rozgar Mission, a flagship rural employment scheme, will be rolled out from July 1, guaranteeing 125 days of paid work per household in rural areas—25 days more than the current MGNREGS mandate. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Rural Development on June 30, 2026.
Enhanced Employment Guarantee
The mission expands the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) from 100 to 125 days of employment per financial year. According to government officials, the additional 25 days are aimed at addressing seasonal unemployment and ensuring sustained income for rural families. The scheme will cover all districts, with priority given to areas with high poverty and migration rates.
“The enhanced guarantee will provide a safety net for vulnerable households, especially during lean agricultural periods,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Rural Development. “It also focuses on creating durable assets like water conservation structures, rural roads, and sanitation facilities.”
Implementation Framework
The rollout will be phased, starting with 250 districts in the first quarter, expanding to all districts by December 2026. Workers will be registered through local gram panchayats, and wages will be linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for agricultural labourers. The government has allocated ₹2.5 lakh crore for the mission in the 2026-27 budget.
Critics have questioned the government’s ability to implement the expanded scheme without delays or corruption. However, the ministry maintains that a dedicated monitoring system, including real-time tracking of work orders and payments via a mobile app, will ensure transparency. “We have learned from MGNREGS and built in safeguards,” the official added.
Impact on Rural Economy
Economists estimate that the additional 25 days of guaranteed employment could boost rural incomes by 15-20% in target households. The scheme is also expected to reduce distress migration to urban centres. According to a World Bank study cited by the ministry, every ₹1 invested in MGNREGS generates ₹1.2 in local economic activity through multiplier effects.
“The Viksit Bharat Rozgar Mission is a step towards fulfilling the government’s promise of doubling rural incomes by 2030,” said Ajith Athrady, reporting for the newspaper. “However, success depends on timely wage payments and quality of asset creation.”
Political Reactions
The opposition has accused the government of making a pre-election announcement, with the next general elections due in 2029. Congress spokesperson said, “This is a copy of our proposed Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which promised 150 days. The government is merely playing catch-up.”
Despite criticism, the government maintains that the enhanced guarantee and comprehensive framework will strengthen rural livelihood security and lead to better asset creation. The mission will be reviewed quarterly by a national steering committee chaired by the Prime Minister.
