The Union government on Sunday acknowledged the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from his ministerial post, with top leaders hailing his lifelong dedication to public service. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted the resignation, praising Pradhan’s work across multiple sectors over a career spanning more than three decades.
Government Acknowledges Pradhan’s Contributions
In an official statement, the Prime Minister’s Office described Pradhan as a “tireless worker who has left an indelible mark on the nation’s development.” Pradhan served as Minister of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship since 2021, and earlier as Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The statement noted that under his tenure, key reforms in school education — including the National Education Policy 2020 implementation — and expansion of skill training reached over 15 million youth across India.
“Dharmendra Pradhan ji has always prioritized the nation above everything. His work in the energy sector ensured energy access to every village, and his efforts in education have transformed the learning landscape for millions,” the PMO said. “We thank him for his lifelong commitment to public service.”
Pradhan’s Tenure and Achievements
During his five-year stint as Petroleum Minister, Pradhan oversaw the expansion of the Ujjwala scheme, providing free LPG connections to over 80 million households. He also spearheaded the city gas distribution network, covering 470 districts. In education, he launched the PM SHRI Schools scheme aimed at upgrading 14,500 schools across the country.
“His contribution to India’s energy security and education reform will always be remembered,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a separate note.
Reactions from Political Leaders
Union ministers from various departments took to social media to express gratitude. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari called Pradhan a “dynamic leader who always put the nation first.” Congress leaders, however, questioned the timing of the resignation, with spokesperson Jairam Ramesh stating, “The government should clarify the reasons behind this sudden removal.”
Pradhan himself issued a brief statement: “I am grateful to the Prime Minister and the party for giving me the opportunity to serve the nation. I will continue to work for the people in every capacity possible.”
Context and Future Role
Political analysts suggest Pradhan may be assigned organizational duties within the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of upcoming state elections. The resignation comes amid a reshuffle of some Union ministries to bring in younger faces.
