Centre refutes false claims of judges at London badminton event

The Centre informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that social media posts and reports claiming over 75 judges and ministers traveled to London for a badminton event are "completely false and misleading."

Background of the Case

The response came in connection with a plea filed by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) seeking action against social media posts and online publications that allegedly spread false claims about judges of constitutional courts, Union ministers, and members of the executive participating together in a badminton tournament in London.

Court Proceedings

After hearing the matter, Justice Tejas Karia stated that he would pass an order and indicated that social media intermediaries and digital platforms should remove such false content and provide subscriber details of accounts responsible for uploading and disseminating the posts. The High Court also directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to examine the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

Misinformation Campaign

The plea highlighted that photographs from the All India Judges' Badminton Championship, held at Thyagaraj Stadium in New Delhi on November 29, 2025, were wrongly circulated online and falsely projected as images from the London event. This exposed a misinformation campaign being carried out through social media posts.

The petition further noted that despite the claims being debunked by the PIB Fact Check Unit, the allegedly false content continued to circulate on various social media platforms.
