Chhattisgarh Government Forms Committee for UCC Draft
The Chhattisgarh government has set up a five-member panel to prepare a draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for the state. The committee will be chaired by Justice Desai, a former judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, as announced by the Chief Minister's Office on June 25, 2026.
Composition of the Panel
The other members of the panel include retired IAS officers Shatrughan Singh and M K Raut, senior advocate Mohan Pawar, and former principal Jyoti Rani Singh. The committee has been tasked with studying the feasibility and drafting the UCC for Chhattisgarh.
Background and Objective
The Uniform Civil Code aims to replace personal laws based on religious customs with a common set of laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all citizens. The Chhattisgarh government's move aligns with the broader push for UCC in several states. The panel is expected to submit its report within a stipulated timeframe, though no deadline has been publicly announced.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, the committee will consult legal experts, community leaders, and the public to ensure a comprehensive draft. The government emphasized that the UCC would promote gender equality and social harmony.
